What are values?
Since 2009 I am a certified consultant for the Barrett Values Centre Cultural Transformation Tools. For all these years I have worked with leaders and their companies on their values and their corporate cultures.
As a leader, you make decisions and manage employees, of course, but you are also the de facto cultural leader. Consciously or not, your manners and behaviours transmit a wide range of cultural markers and set the stage for a healthy or dysfunctional organization.
Furthermore, your values drive your behaviour. So consciously knowing your values, and translating them to behaviour in every area of your life, will not just benefit you, but your whole organization. And since it will make you congruent, it will make you trustworthy. The sum of your mission and you values will make you an inspiration for others. And it will make it easier for yourself to leave a legacy you can be proud of.
Step 1: How to find your values
The fastest and easiest way to find your values is by taking the free personal values assessment of the Barrett Values Centre. The results will not just represent your values, but they will indicate your level of consciousness as well. Finally there will be some exercises to help you understand your results. Fill out the assessment, and the results will be right into your inbox.
Step 2: Translate your values into behaviour
Values in itself don’t have any value so to speak. Only after you have translated them in do’s and don’ts in behaviour in every area of you live they will start to have meaning. My suggestion is that you look at the following area’s and translate your top 5 values into do’s and don’ts.
- Your spiritual life
- Your health and fitness
- Your intellectual life
- Your emotional life
- Your character
- Your love relationship
- Your parenting
- Your social life
- Your financial life
- Your career
Step 3: Time for action
Start small. Choose 3 things you want to stop doing, and 3 things you want to start doing for this month. Do the same next month. In a years time you will have changed a lot, you will be more congruent and more inspirational, you will have more clarity and more energy. And you will feel proud about yourself.
In my next post I will talk about your vision.
